GSEE-FES
NATIONAL REPORT ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE
GSEE and the Secretariat for Equality of the Confederation in collaboration with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), presented today at an event hosted at the premises of Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESHEA) the first official study, that they jointly conducted on the phenomenon of sexual harassment and violence at work.
The data are revealing and indicate the extent of the problem, but also the fact that these phenomena are unfortunately not reported to the competent authorities.
Throughout all stages of the research, the widespread need and anxiety for victims to have access to effective protection mechanisms throughout the territory has also emerged.
According to the report:
– 1 in 3 workers have been sexually harassed in the workplace (31.4%).
– 3 in 4 victims are female workers (75.3%).
– Only 1.6% of victims reported the incident to the competent authorities.
– Victims do not inform the competent authorities either because they do not trust them (27.2%) or because they believe that nothing substantial will be done (51.1%).
– Only 3.1% are covered by a collective labor agreement with provisions relating to sexual harassment.
– 78.9% stated that trade unions should insist on the inclusion of appropriate regulations in enteprises’ internal Regulations on sexual harassment and violence.
– The functioning of institutional tripartite social dialogue structures, where trade unions officially participate, with mandate both on gender equality, discrimination, violence and harassment at work and of monitoring and assessing the situation in the field along with data from the inspections carried out by the labor inspectorate and their outcomes, has ceased.
